Kenyan Flower
Success Rate In Japan
The import to Japan of the Kenya rose flower rose by more than 200% between
October 2005 and October 2006. At the end of the year 2005 the total rose
imports from Kenya to the Japanese market stood at over 3.9 million stems
while by October 2006 the total imports of cut roses to Japan reached over
10 million stems. This rapid increase is attributed to the superior and
likeable quality of the Kenyan rose flowers as compared to those originating
from the traditional markets and current increasing direct trade in Kenyan
flowers that has now started to take root as opposed to the earlier process
of going through European auctions which took time as flowers underwent
value addition and finally delayed reaching the market on time while fresh.
Notably, Kenyan flower companies have now began to grasp the Japanese market
requirements, business practises and aided by two direct flights from Nairobi,
they are able to deliver flowers directly to Narita Airport.

New Enquiries
Kenya has continued to receive new enquiries on her flower imports to Japan
which has shown remarkable appreciation for the unique qualities of the
Kenyan rose flower.
During the month of April 2007, Ohara Flower and Seed Company which is based
in Kansai and brings together 16 flower companies under The Osaka Flower Foundation
and holds a flower distribution franchise in Japan for over 6,000 whole sale
stores, expressed interest in coming on board in the import to Japan of the
Kenyan flowers. They are looking beyond the rose flower as the only variety
and therefore would like to expand their flower base to other species which
Kenya has already been exporting to Europe and are as attractive as roses.
