KENYA PARTICIPATES IN THE 10TH ANNUAL MEETING OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIETY FORUM (STS);KYOTO, JAPAN-6TH-8TH OCT, 2013

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science and Technology; Professor Jacob T. Kaimenyi led the Kenyan delegation to the 10th Annual meeting of the Science and technology in Society forum that took place from 6th -8th October 2013 in Kyoto; Japan.

The forum brought together about 1,000 global leaders in Science and Technology, Policy, Business and media from approximately 100 countries of different regions and international organizations. The two-fold theme of the meeting was innovation and sustainability which focused on reflecting on how to expand the "lights" and control the "shadows" of Science and technology.

The forum emphasized the fact that Science and technology diplomacy enhances relations across national boundaries. Therefore need for enhanced support for education, research and local entrepreneurship is essential for capacity building in developing countries. Accordingly, funding agencies should finance international science collaboration programmes that promote multilateral arrangements, especially on global issues.

During the Ministerial round table meeting on Human Resource Mobility, Professor Kaimenyi apprised the meeting on Kenya's efforts in enhancing rapid capacity building in a wide range of areas including science, technology, and innovation (ST&I) to get the critical mass of professionals needed in executing the national development agenda.

Other key Kenyan delegates to the forum included His Excellency Mr. Benson H.O Ogutu; Ambassador, Kenya Embassy to Japan, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak; Chief Executive Officer, National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation; and Dr. Florence Wambugu; Chief Executive Officer, Africa Harvest-Biotech Foundation International, among others.

The forum agreed to hold the 11th Annual STS meeting in Kyoto from Sunday, October 5th to Tuesday, October 7th 2014.
