Kenya Energy Seminar & Japan Africa Business Forum 9th -11th June, 2014

Keynote speech by Hon. Davis Chirchir, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum at the Japan-Africa Business Forum.

The Kenya Embassy, in collaboration with JETRO, JICA and JOGMEC, held a Kenya Energy Seminar followed by a networking reception on 9th June 2014 in Tokyo. The seminar was a side event preceding the Japan Africa Business Forum held on 10th -11th June, 2014.

The event was presided over by Mr. Albert Mugo, Chief Executive Officer, KenGen on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Davis Chirchir. Hon. Chirchir also gave a keynote speech on "Energy and Infrastructure" in the Japan-Africa Business Forum. The Kenya Energy Seminar was aimed at showcasing the excellent opportunities in the energy sector in Kenya and the sub-region in general. It is hoped that the seminar will augment the two countries' efforts in boosting investment exchanges and trade interactions particularly in the area of energy development.

The seminar was attended approximately 200 participants from private sectors in Japan. In attendances there were also His Excellency Mr. Tatsushi Terada, the Ambassador of Japan to Kenya, Mr. Satoshi Miyamoto, the President of JETRO, Mr. Yasunori Nakayama, the Deputy Director-General for International Trade Policy, Trade Policy Bureau of METI, Mr. Izuru Kimura, the Director, Africa Division 1, Africa Department of JICA. –Ambassador's Opening Remarks

Similarly, Kenya was well represented at the Japan-Africa Business forum held under the theme "Succeeding in Africa: unlocking growth and opportunities". The forum was jointly organized by the Africa diplomatic Corps in Tokyo with the African Development Bank Representative Office in Asia (Tokyo). The forum drew together Africa's and Japan's top business leaders innovators and executives doing business in Africa. Kenya government was represented by the following as either keynote speakers or panelists; Hon. Davis Chirchir, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum; Amb. Mr. Dennis Awori, Chairman Toyota East Africa Ltd.; Mr. Peter Munga, Chairman of Equity Bank; Dr. Nathaniel Agola, the Associate Professor, Doshisha University; Mr. Joseph Ogutu, the Director of Safaricom Ltd.; Mr. James Kuria, the Head of Africa Business Development, Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting Co., Ltd.; Dr. Paul Mwaniki, the Vice Chairman of Kenya healthcare Federation.
