OFFICIAL VISIT TO JAPAN BY HON. DAVID EKWEE ETHURO, SPEAKER OF THE SENATE

Hon. David Ekwee Ethuro, The Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Kenya was today received by his Japanese Counterpart in Tokyo, Hon. Masaaki Yamazaki - President of the House of Councillors where they held fruitful discussions.

The Hon. Speaker was leading a high powered delegation of members of the Senate Liaison Committee on a visit to the National Diet of Japan. The other members of the delegation included Senator Amos S. Wako, Senator James Orengo, Senator Kiraitu Murungi, Senator Abu Chiaba and Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.

During a meeting, the two leaders hailed the warm and cordial bilateral relations between Kenya and Japan. They exchanged views on the need to further strengthen our bilateral ties including the promotion of bilateral trade and investments between the two countries. They further explored the issues surrounding the upcoming TICAD VI Summit.

After the courtesy call on Hon. Yamazaki, the Hon. Speaker and his delegation held a three hours interactive session on the work of the Japanese House of Councillors (Senate). The session covered a number of important aspects of the work of the Senate including key Committees and their functions. One of the most interesting was the procedure for adjustment of "the will of the two houses" which refers to dispute resolution mechanisms for the bi-cameral parliamentary system in Japan.
