HER EXCELLENCY MARGARET KENYATTA, LAUNCHES THE THIRD EDITION OF FIRST LADY'S HALF MARATHON IN TOKYO, JAPAN

LAUNCH OF THE 2016 FIRST LADY'S HALF MARATHON

On 30th August, 2015, Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya ran 5-kilometres around the Imperial Palace and thereafter launched the 3rd edition of the First Lady's Half Marathon at the Hibiya Park-Tokyo, in aid of Beyond Zero Campaign geared towards the improvement of children and maternal health in Kenya.

The activity was after the World Assembly for Women Conference held in Tokyo on 28th -29th August, 2015 in which the First Lady congregated with other dignitaries from around the globe to discuss critical issues in respect of Women health and welfare. The aim of launching this key event here in Tokyo, was for Her Excellency to highlight the admirable quality of TOKYO as a Marathon City, in consideration of Tokyo hosting the Olympics in 2020, and recognition of Japan's cooperation with Kenya to improve health sector.

The First Lady's Half Marathon is annual event held in Kenya to specifically mobilize resources for purchase and distribution of fully equipped Mobile clinics to poor communities in Kenya. The program is aimed at supporting the Government's efforts in reducing child & maternal mortality as part of Kenya's commitments under Goal No. 5 of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.
So far, 32 counties have received fully equipped Mobile Clinics, with facilities akin to level 4 hospitals. The First lady is committed to eventually provide all the 47 counties with the clinics, through the Beyond Zero Campaigns.
