Amb. Moi Lemoshira earlier today received Amb. Koshikawa KAZUHIKO, Commissioner of the International Horticultural EXPO to be held in Yokohama, Japan from March to September, 2027. Dubbed as the Green EXPO 2027 the event is themed on Scenery of the Future for Happiness and it aims at ‘globally promoting horticulture and landscaping, realising lifestyles filled with flowers and greenery, and contributing to the creation of communities and economies and to the resolution of social challenges.’ The EXPO will be co-hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure Transport and Tourism and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The International Society for Horticulture Science (ISHS) identifies Japan as one the countries with the largest increase in importation of horticultural products. Horticultural sector is a major component of Kenya’s economy with horticultural crops accounting for a significant percentage to the total agricultural production. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Kenya earned nearly USD 900M from export of flowers. The value of the horticulture sector closely compares to other leading foreign exchange earners in addition to diaspora remittances, export of other cash crops of tea and coffee, as well as tourism.
Kenya’s participation in the Green EXPO will, therefore, present huge prospects for promoting its horticultural products including flowers, fruits, and related items such as nuts and to take advantage of Japan’s growing market. The Embassy looks forward to partner with Kenyan stakeholders in preparation for participation which would be coordinated by Economic Affairs and Commercial Diplomacy Directorate, Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, https://afa.go.ke/horticulture/home and https://www.makeitkenya.go.ke/
